It generally takes two hours to reach Meerut from Delhi, but now this travel time has been reduced to 50 minutes. The Delhi- Meerut Expressway has finally been opened for the public making it easier for the commuters on this route. The 96 Km long Delhi -Meerut Expressway has been operational since Thursday, April 1, said Mudit Garg, project director of the Expressway claiming that it will now take only 50 minutes to travel between Delhi and Meerut.
The 14 lane expressway has been opened on both sides for the traffic, he said adding that the toll booths would also be functional soon, until then there is no toll.
Phase 1 of the highway from Akshardham to UP Gate (14-km) and Phase 3 from Dasna to Hapur (22-km) has already been operational since its inauguration in 2018. And now the 19-km Phase 2 of the expressway linking UP Gate & Dasna and the 32-km-long Phase 4 linking Dasna and Meerut is functional. The authorities had completed the Delhi section of the expressway in just 18 months.
The illumination of the Delhi-Meerut expressway is done by solar power. For illumination, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has installed around 5,000 streetlights. It has 2.5 metres wide cycle tracks on both sides and a 2 metres wide footpath as well. The total length of the highway is nearly 96 kilometres, with the first 27 kilometres being 14 lanes and the rest being 6 lanes.
