Traveling is fun and traveling is enjoyable, but it takes a toll on your body. To make that you enjoy your vacation to the fullest, here are a few tips to staying fit while you’re on the go.
- Pack healthy snacks
Junk food is all well and good in theory for a road trip, but in order to stay healthy, you have to eat healthy. Stock up on healthy snacks like fresh fruits, yogurt and stuff you can throw together to make a salad.
If you’re worried about perishable goods, you can always opt for baked soya chips instead of their fried counterparts. Dried fruits and nuts are a good alternative as well because they don’t squish up in your travel bags and they’re easy to munch on the move.
Granola bars and bottled water as essential to keep your energy levels up. Granola bars stay fresh for at least six months and they’re an excellent source for carbohydrates. Bottled water will keep you from getting dehydrated and becoming sluggish.
- Eating healthy at your destination
Stick to boiled or bottled water to avoid water borne diseases. Don’t use ice because you don’t know what kind of water’s been used to make it. Most importantly, eat food that’s been cooked properly and thoroughly to kill any foreign agents and make sure you consume it while it’s still hot.
- First-aid and Medication
If you’re on any kind of prescription medication or vitamin supplements, you should carry them with you rather than risk falling sick on your trip. Better yet, pack the essentials of a first aid kit so that you aren’t caught off guard if anything were to happen.
If you’re taking a flight out, you shouldn’t pack these in your carry on baggage due to certain airline restrictions but keep them with the bags that you’ll be checking in instead.
If you wear glasses, then you probably want to pack an extra pair, just in case.
- Travel Vaccinations
If you’re going to be traveling to a new place and a new environment, it’s crucial that all your vaccinations are up to date. Go for a medical check up before your trip and ask your doctor about any vaccinations that you should get before heading off into paradise. Some countries require you have certain vaccinations, and such in their law, so cross check these details before heading on to your trip.
Since some vaccinations need weeks or months to be properly administered, it’s best for you to go check in with your doctor six to eight weeks before leaving for your trip. Be sure to tell him accurate details of your:
◦ Medical history
◦ Age
◦ Destination and where you’ll be staying (Hotel, motel, or house boat etc.)
◦ The season in which you’re traveling (Summers or Winters)
◦ How long your trip is (Weeks or months or even a year)
◦ The type of traveling you’ll be doing (Backpacking or buses etc.)

Most of the infectious diseases that people catch while traveling come from insect bites. Malaria, yellow fever and dengue fever some of the most serious infections. To protect yourself and your children diligently apply mosquito repellent. If you prefer, you can get an aloe-vera variety which not only protects your skin, but rejuvenates the cells as well. If you’re going to go backpacking or wandering through lush green areas, wear long socks and full sleeved shirts where ever possible.
Another danger to your skin while traveling is sun burn and skin cancer. If you plan on being exposed to the sun for prolonged period, it’s recommended that you apply plenty of sun screen to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. This is especially true if you plan on sun bathing or hanging out at the beach.
- Fitness
Travel on foot as much as you can to make up for the routine gym sessions that you’ll be missing. Long walks work towards improving your stamina and getting you a decent cardio work out as well.
Of course, if you have a pool where you staying, then you should definitely take a dip and cover a few laps. Swimming is one of the most well rounded forms of exercise. They work on toning up your body while stretching your cardiovascular muscles as well.
