Established in 1949 and covering an area of 296.85 km2 this is a breathtaking natural splendor. It is the first and largest national park among the eight national parks of Croatia and got inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979. The park is having a grand collection of water bodies, forest and diversity of animal life. The lakes out here are having distinctive colors, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. Plitvice lakes national park is mainly recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and pristine production of travertine (tufa) through chemical and biological action.
Separated into upper and lower lakes there are sixteen lakes at Plitvice lakes national park, formed due to natural dams of travertine. For visitors there are about eight km of pathways and wooden walking trails around the lakes descending from an altitude of 636m to 503m above sea level.
Recognized as an impressive natural monument for the benefit and enjoyment of the people these lakes are 60 years old now. Plitvice Park is still providing inspiration for visitors and nowadays one of the biggest attractions in Croatia.
