Idukki is the largest hill station in Kerala. It is rich in terms of its natural beauty. This makes Idukki an ideal tourist destination. There are lots of tourist attractions in Idukki. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is one of them. This is one of the finest wildlife reserves in the country. It is spread across an area of about 106 square kms.This place now offers trekking for its sporty tourists. There is a boat especially for tourists called the Kolumban. It has a capacity of carrying 20 people. It takes you around the beautiful sanctuary where you can spot Bears, jungle cats, Elephants, Kingfisher and many more.
The next attraction will have you spell bound with its architectural beauty. It is the Idukki Arch Dam. Constructed between two mountains called the Kurathimala and Kuryanmala, this area has about 20 dams with a few underground tunnels with underground power generator. According to the legends, the two mountains were two different tribes which where cursed by Lord Rama. He was angry at the fact that they were hiding and watching Devi Sitahaving a bath in the river. The best time to visit this spot is in between August to March. There are other beautiful dams like the Ponmudi, Kulamavu, Cheruthoni and Anayirangal.
If you want to go for hiking or trekking then the best place to visit is the Meesapulimala. It has got amazing landscape,making it a trekker’s paradise. It stands tall at the height of about 2640 meters making it the second highest peak in Kerala.
26kms away from Idukki is a picturesque location called the . It promises to show you the beautiful Blue Mountains and the Muvattupuzha river. Nadukani is situated at about 3000 feet. Because of the river, you can get to see some rare species like the Wild Rabbit, Sambhar and many more.
Idukki has a fair share of waterfalls. The most famous is the Thomman kuthu waterfalls. It is popular because locals say it has a dark past as to why it got this name. People say that a tribe called the Thomman’s downed in this seven- step waterfall. There are also Anchurili waterfalls which provides the best view of the forest. Other waterfalls that one can visit are the Cheeyappara, Valara, Njandirukki, and Keezharkuthu.
There is also a garden with a splendid view called the Hill View Park. Here you can come and have a family picnic. It is situated between the Idukki Arch Dam and Cheruthoni Dam.
