Although the Hindu festival of Dussehra is celebrated in almost every city but Mysore Dussehra in Karnataka is one of the biggest and famous among all. They enjoy this auspicious celebration on a grand level for 10 days. Here we bring you some of the main things that you need to know about it:
The significance of Mysore Dussehra:
Dussehra signifies victory of good over evil. The main story behind it is the way God Ram defeated Raavan. Another mythological belief that people have for this day is when Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon king Mahishasura. Different types of performances showcasing the culture and tradition of Karnataka is organized in the great Durbar Hall of the Maharaja’s Palace for all the 10 days.
History:
According to the myths it is said that Mysore was ruled by a demon Mahishasura who used to punish people who worshipped God. Due to this people went to seek help from Goddess Chamundeshwari. To save them the Goddess fought with King Mahishasura and finally defeated him. So, to pay respect people of Mysore started celebrating this festival for such long days.
How it is celebrated?
The whole palace is decorated with vibrant lights and along with Indians, foreigners too gather to see the celebrations. A lot of music concerts, dance performances, and amusement rides are seen all over the city. A Dussehra exhibition including jewelry, handmade items, and finger licking food is also held. The major thing that grabs everyone’s attention is the beautifully decorated horses, camels, and elephants which are spotted roaming around the Palace. On the 10th day, all the rituals end with a torchlight parade at the Bannimantap and is known as ‘Vijayadashami’.
