What started in Miami Beach in 1999 as a small one-day WMC closing party with a nominal ticket price has now emerged as the crowning event of Miami’s annual March madness of electronic dance, the Ultra Music Festival. Held in Downtown Miami in Bayfront Park, it was founded by Russel Faibisch, an insurance and bail bonds businessman, and Alex Omes, a nightclub manager. With performances by Rabbit in the Moon and DJ Baby Anne, the event was held on South Beach and was a major success.
With editions in Europe, Asia and South America now, Ultra Music Festival was merely a one day festival from 1999 to 2006. The festival is an international phenomenon today and draws thousands of fans from all over the world. In 2013, for the first time in Ultra Music Festival history, the festival took place across two consecutive weekends. However, in 2014, the festival will return to a one-weekend format. In 2014, the Ultra Music Festival will make its debut on the African continent with an inaugural 2 day event in Cape Town and Johannesburg on February 14th and 15th respectively.
In fact, it also happens to be one of the top grossing festivals of the year, with a major venue setting and sales of more than 100,000 tickets. The very fact that early-bird $149.95 tickets for Ultra 2014 sold out online in four minutes when they were released in May and advanced tickets, which went on sale immediately afterward, were gone 20 minutes later stands testimony to the popularity of Ultra Music Festival.
